When I first started working remotely, I remember feeling this quiet stress every day. Everyone was working, but it felt like everyone was working separately. Updates were scattered everywhere. Some came through private chats, some in group channels, others in voice notes, and sometimes in conversations that started with, "I thought I told you..." It created confusion, delays, and honestly, unnecessary anxiety.
I didn’t want to micromanage or check on people every hour. I just wanted clarity. I needed a way to streamline communication, make everyone feel more connected, and ensure that nothing slipped through the cracks. That's when we decided to try something simple, yet effective: a daily update message. No meetings. No pressure. Just one short check-in.
We created a format that would only take two minutes to fill out and would be shared at the end of each workday. Each person would provide a quick summary of their day in the following format:
What I completed today
What I’m working on next
What I need help with
An example might look like this:
Completed:
– Updated landing page copy
– Set up calendar booking
Next:
– Begin automations setup
Blocker:
– Waiting on brand colors from client
That’s it. It’s not a report. It’s not a story. It’s simply transparency, and it only takes a couple of minutes.
The reason this simple daily update works is that teams don’t slow down because of a lack of effort. They slow down because:
We assume others know what we’re doing
Tasks get stuck silently
People hesitate to ask for help
Communication only happens when something is already late
The daily update solves all of these issues. It keeps everyone in the loop without feeling like you have to constantly check in. Here’s why it works so well:
It builds trust among team members.
It keeps projects moving forward, even when there’s no immediate need for a meeting.
It reduces misunderstandings by clarifying everyone’s progress.
It removes micromanagement because everyone knows what’s happening and when.
It makes everyone feel supported by allowing for early identification of potential blockers.
The whole team breathes easier because the uncertainty is gone.
If you want to try this in your own team, simply share this message in your team channel:
_"Daily Update Format (send before logging off):
What you completed
What you're working on next
Anything you need help with"_
Give it one week, and you’ll feel the difference. It’s a small habit, but it has a huge impact on the way everyone works together.
Business doesn’t grow from big dramatic changes. It grows from small habits done consistently. The daily update is one of those habits. It takes little time to implement, but the results can be transformational.
Try it this week. Your team will feel different, and you’ll notice a shift toward clearer communication and better workflow. This is the “Let Go Boss” shift in action.
